Course Description |
The course will begin by introducing a conceptualization of the terms art as making and culture as identity in which the historical
will serve as the context by means of which the very construction of identity is achieved by and through making. Taking this as
the basic assumption of the course, historical examples will be given to investigate the occasions under which this making of
identity is achieved. Beginning from stone tool technology as the oldest form of making, Göbeklitepe and Çatalhöyük is compared
and contrasted in terms of how the identity served as the very motivation of making which in turn help identity to be built as the
very first structure in the history. After this early beginnings Ancient Greek is investigated as how art can be a bona fide example
of ‘identity making’ concerning especially drama and theatre. Moving towards Renaissance we see how making of identity has
evolved into a fully competent and official institution under the name university so that the higher education has become the
standard that determines the areas and scope of this making under specialized disciplines of art and science. Modernity and
modernism is the last period to be taken as the extreme case of identity making showing how technology sets the standards for
living for everyone effecting humanity on a global scale and how art is now the marginalized part of culture rather than its
initiator as the very origin of its making. The course ends with the discussion of possible future under these conditions. |
