Course Description |
The role and importance of geo-mechanics, classifications of earth materials according to theirs basic physical and
mechanical characteristics. The distributions and origins of natural stresses in earth crust and the measuring
methods. Secondary stress redistributions resulted in by engineering applications. Stress analysis by analytical
and graphical (Mohr Circles) methods and failure criterion (Mohr-Coulomb) for brittle rocks. The stress-strain
concept and mechanical behaviour of intact and fractured rocks and soils. Time dependent behaviour of rock. The
environmental conditions and material parameters affecting strength and behaviour of earth materials for the
explanations of faulting and folding mechanisms in earth crust. Hoek-Brown failure criterion for fractured rock
mass. Main laboratory test on rock and soil. Slope stability analysis. In-situ measurement and monitoring
techniques for engineering applications. Stabilization methods for soil and weak rocks. Consolidation theory and
soil compaction. Consolidation processes and its relation with diagenesis. Bearing capacity of weak and
unconsolidated soil and settlement problems. In-situ tests. Case histories for applications. |
